Fear and Fearlessness of the American Independent Film
Filmmaker
Jeff Nichols, presenting his first feature
Shotgun Stories in the Perspectives Section, is one of the young representatives of the American independent film.
“It’s all got its bad and good sides,” he told Neil Young after the screening. The change of locations, small American towns, where people receive the crew broadmindedly yet wonderingly, as well as the constant lack of finance and time all form part of the independent filmmaking.
“At the end of the day it all boils down to the aspiration to tell stories and I sincerely hope that I’ve succeeded,” explained the director. The film, confronting the eternal subjects of vengeance and complex family relationships, has met with enthusiastic response throughout Europe thus paving the creative path for this promising filmmaker. See for yourselves on 17 and 18 November.
