Maja Weiss: Installation of Love
And finally it is released: the new film by
Maja Weiss! It was premiered at Liffe on Friday, 16 November, and attended by the entire Slovenian film elite. Installation of Love is a film like nothing the Slovenian audiences have ever expected let alone seen. It represents the next step in Slovenian cinematography.
The film is based on an old script by
Zvone Hočevar. The basic love story was complemented by a modern art installation as well as a complete film team that prevent the viewer from ever knowing exactly who ‘the real players’ are, who actually directs the film, who is in front and who behind the camera. Owing to the complex superimposed structure the spectator believes in the installation even after he realises it is an illusion. The subtle transitions between the different layers ensnare the viewer, capturing his attention and fascinating him entirely.
Borrowing from the mousetrap concept in Hamlet, Maja Weiss stages a play within a play (film within a film), and in the end also involves the viewer.
The director and co-scriptwriter worked separately, but agreed that the toying with the form was the key, that the simplicity of the story and complexity of the structure were important and that their experimentation would stretch the limits of film illusion.
Should you no longer trust in Slovenian film, then the film is a must: it will be screened again on Tuesday, 20 November, at the Kinoklub Vič.
Become a part of the installation and let yourselves be surprised.
